I came a cross a great idea using found materials.  You can collect and gather a variety of recycled objects from around your home or ask your students to bring in materials, but I just focused on collecting lids.  I have collected various sizes, colours, and shapes.  From the dollar store I purchased a large, shallow tray to gather all the objects and some circular cork boards for children to arrange their materials on.  Choose a space in your room to house the materials or display them on a table–tray in the middle and cork boards around to create an inviting space.  Allow children to create designs based on colour, shapes or other attributes and see where the discussion may go….

For the last 2 weeks, the children and I have been singing this song:

We sing it a few times a week and the children draw the shapes in the air with their finger as we sing.


The children are still interested in shapes.  So today, I decided to let them use shapes to create with.

At the math centre, I provided pre-cut shapes for the children who do not have scissor skills, and traced shapes for the children who are capable of cutting the shapes out on their own, or those who want to try with the help of one of the teachers.  I also provided sheets of paper, glue, and markers.  The children cut, or used the pre-cut shapes to create pictures.

Some of the children created people.  They used squares as the body, circles for the head and rectangles for arms and legs.  Some children created vehicles using the rectangles as the body of the car and circles for wheels.  One little boy created a rocket ship.

The children really enjoyed having the ability and freedom to create whatever picture they wanted to, and it was a great way to reinforce basic shapes.


On Friday, our class went on a Shape Hunt.  We changed the words for “Going on a Bear Hunt”.  We rolled the circle around the lake, carried triangles and rectangles through tall grass and found a square in behind a tree.  The kids thought it was great.  We sat in a  large circle and made up actions as we went along.

Afterwards, I told the children we were going on a real shape hunt.  We had to find all of the shapes that were hidden in our classroom.  I had hidden one shape for each student so everyone would have a shape to find.  Once they found all of them, I had them sit with the other students who had found the same shape.  This adding a “matching” game component to it.  Then, we all sat in the circle again and each child got to hold up the shape he/she found and tell us the name of that shape.

The children had so much fun they asked if we could do it again.  I plan on doing it this Friday too.  Until then, I added a few of the shapes to our math centre so that they can play themselves during free play time, if they would like to.


Our students have been bringing in cars and trucks from home recently.  Transportation is a great lead into talking about shapes My teaching partner and I decided to expand on the children’s interest and began integrating 2D shapes into our math centre.

On Monday, we put sand molds that are shapes into our sand table.  We had to start a list of names of the children who wanted a turn to play in it!  Their enthusiasm lasted all through Tuesday.  It remained the most popular centre in the room. 

On Wednesday, we put a turtle matching game in the water centre.  The turtles’ backs are shapes and the shape on their shells are cut out.  The children have to match the shapes to fit the shells onto the turtle.  The children loved this activity too.  Today they asked if we could take the water centre outside for recess so they could continue to play in it.  Luckily, it was a beautiful day so we could!

Tomorrow, I am going to have a “Shape Hunt”.  I cut out enough shapes for each student.  While they are outside for recess, I will hide them around the classroom so we can go on a hunt for them once we are back inside.
